Love, laughter and a little Halloween magic at Memories Dementia Café.
Halloween at Memories Dementia Café was something I had been looking forward to for months. I was expecting scares, bumps in the night, a few frightening faces and perhaps the occasional scream.
What I wasn't expecting was a Halloween filled with love!
Indeed, as the afternoon unfolded, I began to wonder whether the ghost of Cilla Black had taken up residence in St Anthony's Community Centre. I couldn't see her anywhere, but I could certainly feel her spirit in the room.
Our first wonderful story involved Declan, who had recently met his long-lost brother, Anthony, for the very first time.
Separated at birth, the two brothers had finally found one another, and Anthony came along to join us at the Café.
I could almost hear Cilla whispering in my ear:
“Declan, we’ve got a little surprise for you. We’ve found your brother, and he’s here today!”
Thankfully, there was no need for a television studio or a dramatic curtain being pulled back. Just two brothers, reunited after a lifetime apart, enjoying each other’s company over several cups of tea.
Declan proudly introduced Anthony to everyone at the Café, and it was wonderful to see how naturally they got along.
It was one of those moments that reminds you just how extraordinary ordinary afternoons can become.

As the afternoon progressed, I glanced across the room and spotted Donna and Alex looking particularly loved up.
They looked like a couple who had just returned from winning a romantic holiday to the Bahamas on Blind Date.

Once again, I could hear Cilla in my ear.
“Well, chuck, tell us, how did you get on?”
Judging by the smiles on their faces, I think we can safely assume the date had gone rather well!
By this stage, I was beginning to suspect that Cilla’s ghost really was wandering around the Café, spreading a little romance wherever she went.
And then, just when I thought the afternoon couldn’t get any more romantic, there was Simon.
Yes, even Simon found himself a lady friend.
Her name was Maleficent.

Now, some people might question the wisdom of falling for one of Disney’s most notorious villains, but Simon was absolutely smitten.
Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. And who am I to stand in the way of true love?
Unfortunately, Maleficent had other business to attend to.
Young Freddie had persuaded her to help him prepare a magical potion, which he hoped could be rubbed onto the legs of the Portadown Football Club players.

The objective?
To help them win a match this season!
I have to say, if Maleficent can pull that particular miracle off, she deserves considerably more than a kiss from Simon.
So there we had it. A Halloween afternoon that I thought would be filled with ghosts, witches and things that go bump in the night turned out to be an afternoon of reunions, romance, laughter and a little bit of magic.
I never did catch sight of Cilla Black’s ghost.
But somewhere between Declan and Anthony sharing a cup of tea, Donna and Alex enjoying each other’s company, and Simon falling hopelessly in love with Maleficent, I could have sworn I heard her voice one final time.
“Surprise, surprise!”
And perhaps that is the real magic of Memories Dementia Café.
You never quite know what wonderful things might happen when people come together.
